Known as one of the top locations for luxurious living in Arizona, the City of Scottsdale is quite long geographically, stretching north from the edge of Tempe all the way past the McDowell Mountain area to the edge of Carefree. Because of its significant size, this area guide splits the city into two sections, with South Scottsdale stretching from Tempe up past the McCormick/Gainey Ranch area, and North Scottsdale extending all the way to the northernmost portion of the city.
Although both North and South Scottsdale are primarily comprised of desirable neighborhoods and expensive homes, lifestyle differences distinguish the two halves from each other. In this portion of the guide, we will take a look at what makes South Scottsdale a wonderful place to own property.
Perhaps the most recognizable geographical feature of the southern half of Scottsdale is Camelback Mountain, which sits at the junction of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Phoenix. This mountain, the base of which is home to the five-star Phoenician resort, is truly a premium destination.
In addition to the iconic mountain, South Scottsdale is a magnet for food, entertainment, shopping, and night life. Anchored by Old Town Scottsdale, Scottsdale Fashion Square, and the backbone of Scottsdale Road, this area of the city is a fantastic place to have access to almost every upscale offering you could need. (Tasty restaurants are a particular love of mine, with Toca Madera and SumoMaya landing two of the top spots in my household.)
When it comes to your own property purchase, this area of town is flooded with lovely block homes built around the 1960s. However, if you’re looking to be as close as possible to the action, South Scottsdale’s condo and townhouse developments provide an alternative to traditional, detached homes.
If you would prefer access to these offerings without being right in the middle of the “action”, one of the most recognizable premium districts in the area may be the McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch areas, which collectively span more than five square miles. These neighborhoods are home to a pair of golf clubs bearing their names, as well as a network of residential lakes, which provide a welcome oasis in a land of desert living.
As if these options and offerings weren’t enough, one of the most attractive facets of South Scottsdale as a whole is its proximity and access to the rest of the Phoenix area and beyond. South Scottsdale borders the Loop 101 freeway and comes quite close to the Loop 202 as well, providing simultaneous access to various parts of the city, including Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, Arizona State University, Mill Avenue, Downtown Phoenix, and more!
South Scottsdale’s offerings, access, and breadth of housing options make it a fascinating area to explore for owning property.
